Food myths spread like wildfire through media sensationalism, half truths, heavy marketing for some crazy diet book, or just from talking to people already influenced by many misconceptions. While some myths have a bit of reason behind them, they’re not entirely correct, most of the times.

One of the biggest food myths around is about carbohydrates making people fat! It is proven that these trendy no carbs diets are, in fact, bad for a person’s health. Obviously, if a diet is packed with doughnuts and pasta there is no way to escape that extra weight. However, there are also good carbohydrates that have a big positive effect in one’s health such as vegetables and grains, which help the human body to stay energetic and full of fiber. It all comes down to a proper selection.

Another huge misconception is about calories. Many people think that calories fatten a person more at night than during the day, which is totally wrong. It is already proven that what matters is the amount of intake of calories, and not a question of when! When talking about food myths, the silly theory that radiation from a microwave spoils and contaminates food can’t go unnoticed.

Microwaved food is no different from any other cooking technique when it comes to a person’s health, so there is no reason to disregard those quick meals! Finally, one recent myth that is becoming more trendy every day, which is gluten-free products will give more energy and make you feel better. This is one fine example of media and marketing pushing people into this type of diet. Since these products are a lot more expensive the profitability for them is a lot higher. Nevertheless, it couldn’t be more wrong for the average person.

Gluten-free products are for specific consume of people with celiac disease and gluten intolerance. When people with this type of problems finally join this diet, they improve leaps and bounds but it is not due to any magic component. They were just feeling insanely sick while eating products with gluten! However, when people without these conditions eat gluten-free products, it isn’t doing anything differently for their body. Only a psychological effect at most!
